Chandan Yatra
A Sacred Summer Offering to Please Lord Jagannath
Read MoreCelebrating Chandan Yatra
Chandan Yatra begins on Akshaya Tritiya and continues for 21 days during the peak summer. Devotees apply sandalwood paste on Lord Jagannath to offer cooling relief. The practice is rooted in deep Vedic tradition and signifies both devotion and love.
This Yatra marks an ancient instruction from Lord Jagannath to King Indradyumna. Devotees lovingly apply the paste—avoiding the eyes—and the Deities are honored with beautiful decorations and even boat rides in some temples.
At ISKCON Dwarka, devotees create fresh sandalwood paste, perform Go-puja, and enjoy kirtans while celebrating the festival with great enthusiasm.
What is the Story of Chandan Yatra?
This sacred tradition began when Lord Jagannath instructed King Indradyumna to apply sandalwood paste during the hottest month. The cooling scent of Chandan is offered to relieve the Lord from the summer heat, and devotees relish this intimate service.
