Gopashtami Festival 2025
The Divine Day Krishna Became a Cowherd
Gopashtami celebrates the day Lord Krishna transitioned from caring for calves to herding cows at the age of six. On this day, Nanda Maharaja sent Krishna and Balarama to herd cows for the first time. Though it was a boys-only celebration, Srimati Radharani, disguised as Subala-sakha, joined them joyfully with her friends.
What is the Story of Gopashtami?

On Gopashtami, Lord Krishna walked barefoot through Vrindavan with Balarama, purifying the land with His lotus feet. As described in Padma Purana, this sacred event inspires devotees to worship and protect cows. ISKCON temples hold Go-puja, wash cows, feed them, and celebrate their divine role in Krishna's pastimes.
The scriptures glorify Krishna's connection with cows and emphasize cow protection as a divine duty. Devotees around the world remember this day by participating in celebrations at the Goshala, listening to katha, and offering seva. ISKCON communities, including Dwarka and Juhu, hold festivals honoring this beautiful pastime of the Lord.
